Tipped passes
Two situations, different trajectories.
Offensive player on the outside looks to make a sharp dry pass to a player closer to the goal. Defender just gets fingertips on the pass, slightly changing the path of the ball, just enough so the offensive player on the receiving end can't reach it and the ball sails out of bounds.
Situation #1 - pass from the top, ball sails over the end line.
WP 17.1 A corner throw shall be awarded when the entire
ball has passed fully over the goal line excluding between the
goal posts and underneath the crossbar, having last been
touched by the goalkeeper of the defending team or when a
defending player deliberately sends the ball over the goal line.
Interpretation: If a defensive player deflects a pass and
sends the ball out over the goal line, play shall be restarted
with a corner throw. This action is considered as
deliberately sending the ball over the goal line.
Question - does getting the fingertips on that pass, and very slightly altering the path of the ball count as "deflecting" the ball "deliberately"?
Situation #2 - pass from the side, ball sails over the side line.
WP 20.16 To send the ball out of the side of the field of play,
including the ball rebounding from the side of the field of play
above water level.
Question - Does the person making the pass, or the last person to touch the ball "send" it out of the side of the field of play? Does this differ if it's a field block of a shot or a touch on a pass?
Thanks,
Andy Mattson
