Contra Fouls at the World Championships
As many are likely aware, Coach Dettamanti started an interesting thread on waterpoloplanet.com last week regarding the number of contra fouls being whistled at the World Championships. In my view, that thread has moved away from the topic, so I hope we might begin anew here.
From Rome, Loren made the following post on WPP. When he returns, perhaps we can use this as a springboard for discussion here. Thanks.
"I have now been here in Roma '09 for five days and we are now at the point where the referees FINA thinks should be on the big games are being put on the big games. As but ONE example, I just watched a meaningful game with:
(1) 23 goals scored. Of those goals, 5 were from penalty fouls and 10 were from exclusion fouls;
(2) 28 contra fouls whistled, the vast majority away from the ball. No goals were scored off the resultant counter attack;
(3) 33 defensive personals whistled.
I am still two days away from being confident of an analysis, but for now, I found that I did not really enjoy watching that game. If I had wanted to watch swimming, I would have gone to the other venue."
