Intermediate: Major Fouls -The Rules and the Intent of the Rulemakers

This course is designed to present major fouls in three ways: what they are, how and when to call them, and why to call them.

This presentation presumes at least the level of sophistication of a Level I referee. Current USA Water Polo Referee Certification required.

Important course objectives: Explaining the basic considerations required of the referee as part of the major foul decision-making

  • Basics of the Advantage Rule
  • The meaning of the major foul and the extra-player reward
  • The procedural factors essential to the proper execution of the exclusion
  • The differences between fouls of play, fouls of violence, and fouls of conduct
  • The effect of the quality of the pass as a factor in referee decision-making
  • The effect of suit grabbing
