This course is based on the "A Practical Guide to Coaching Water Polo" by Dante Dettamanti. It is designed to present the basic components of how a team, and a player, plays defense. The presentation will be from the perspectives of the player, the team, as well as the referee and the rules. It is designed to provide students with all the theoretical knowledge necessary to whistle successfully at the National level.

During the six days of the course, the instructor will lead students to and through the following course objectives:

  • Explaining the basics of individual offensive and defensive skills as a way to help the referee determine what is and what is not a good play
  • Explaining the basics of team offensive and defensive tactics as a way to help the referee determine what is and what is not a good play
  • How the options available to the team help dictate what can be whistled
  • The effect of fouls whistled and not whistled
  • How the Advantage Rule fits into these decisions
